Ribs… Not the delicious variety. This week has been bonkers… I’ve been going bonkers. I’m thankful this is the last day of the week. Sunday started like any other day, pretty lazy, watched some Netflix and then heading to the golf course with my wife to hit some balls at the driving range.
We share a bucket of 100 balls, 4th ball in and I get a sharp pain in my mid back. I thought I pulled a muscle. I sit down and rest, I’m pretty annoyed as I’ve only just recovered from a previous golf related injury. I give it about 15 mins and try and hit another ball. Still intense pain. I hit 2 more balls out of pure rage (beating me distance record tho) and sit down. The pain was pretty instense. I go to my Chiropractor the next day, they discover a dislocated rib. I didn’t even know that was possible.
They reset it into position, it took 3 attempts and holy shit that was painful. After my appointment I start having a pain in my left lung when I breathe. I head to the dr who sends me to an X-ray. I get the results the next day and he finds a fractured rib, there’s also evidence of 3 previous fractured ribs and a fractured vertebrae, I had no knowledge of those fractures. Dr then sends me for a CT scan.
I get the result the following day. I have 2 fractured ribs and in his words “most of your other ribs have been fractured at some point, you’ve had more fractured ribs than non-fractured ribs. Did you have a rough up-brining?”. I really have no answer to that. I can pinpoint a few incidences, but nothing explains the amount. His diagnosis is that the awkward golf swing re-fractured 2 old fractures. The lung pain is still a mystery. It’s going to be a frustrating few weeks, but it’s a blessing in disguise. At least now I know the reason for my back pain, I also know not to do awkward golf swings…
