The Hopelessness of Homelessness

The Hopelessness of Homelessness (A Poem)

One of the things that I like to share at the end of my homelessness workshops is a poem I’ve written. It’s a succinct way to sum up my experiences of sleeping rough. Poetry has a unique and effective way of conveying emotion.

I’m far from a poet but I enjoy sharing my work.

Nothing prepares you for…

The coldness of the night
Bruises from the fight
Hatred from strangers
Who refuse to conceal their anger

The unforgiving ground
Silence and the sound
Nightmares from your sleep
Ones that make you weep

Your first birthday on the street
Cold embrace of concrete
Distaste of what you smell
From your own personal hell

Nothing prepares you for
The hopelessness of homelessness
